The difference between portal and web site
I have wanted to put my fingers on the keys about this subject for a long time. Now is the time!
Have you attempted Googling (or Yahooing ?) “difference between portal and web site” ? If not, then let me tell you that the most common answers you will find are:
- A Web Portal is a type of Website. A Web Portal acts as a gateway to the internet.
- A webportal is a type of a website.
A website is a collection of webpages and other information(images, sound, files, etc) that are made available to the users and appears to them as a single webserver.
Did you understand now what the difference is? … don’t think so. Let me try explain it to you in just few lines.
A portal is similar to a web page, but rather than representing a view seen by all, it is customized by the individual. Portals allow individuals to select the elements displayed in a way reflecting person’s needs and preferences. Additionaly, a portal relies on authentication and authorization to “know” what information can be provided to the user. For example, a root or admin level user will and must have more permissions (read, write, execute rights) than a typical member (read only).
As a result, rather than the user needing to move from Web site to Web site to find the information needed, the portal brings the information to the individual, making it user-centric.
Apart from these, a web portal usually offers web services such as e-mail, news, stock prices and more. A typical web portal is Yahoo!
If you still didn’t understand the main difference between a web portal and a web site feel free to hit a comment with your question. If you did, then applaud :-)
